At shutdown I am getting a window that pops up with End program DDE Sever .
In order to shut down I have to click end program. Does anyone know what
this is and how to remedy it? I have an HP media center computer bought in
August, running XP
Thanks,
Joyce R

Hi Joyce,

Check this out and see if it helps:

Have you tried disabling the NetDDE and/or Network DDE DSDM services?
Start, Run, type Services.msc, click OK.
This may affect other services from working properly, but if no other
resolution works you could try it.

Report back,

DDE stands for Dynamic Data Exchange. You could stop the application from
running by possibly disallowing it using a firewall or use msconfig to stop
it running in the first place.

There's a registry fix at http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm on
the right side of line 76.. infact there's two of them the "undo" link is to
revert the change if for any reason you don't want the keep the first
change. After you download the "shutdown.reg" file right click on it and
select Combine to add to the registry and stop the End program window
pop-up. To revert the change do the same with the "shutdownundo.reg" file.

I checked the knowledge base and it appears that the fix must be obtained
from Microsoft and can't be downloaded right there. I tried to do the online
chat , but got the message that it would most likely cost 59.00 so I think I
will pass on that one, LOL
May try one of the other suggestions. Thanks to all who answered me so
quickly!

update on the DDE server error:
Terry, I followed your instructions and found that both were already
disabled. I have done mush searching and found lots of references to this
problem being caused by something in Microsoft office's updates. I don't
have office, but I did have a useless (to me) version of Microsoft works
that came with the computer. I uninstalled that. I use Open Office and I
decided to uninstall that. I then reinstalled the latest version of Open
Office and this time, disabled automatic checking for updates, as well as
the excel part of the program. It has been about a week since I have done
these things and I have restarted and completely shutdown many times. So
far, the DDE server error box has not returned.
