shut down freezes after end program:explorer.exe

Since installing SP2, whenever I shut down my computer, the end program
dialog box appears - usually referencing explorer.exe. Then the computer
freezes and will not shut down. What is causing this, and what can I do to
correct it. Note that I am a computer novice. Thanks!

Suggestion:

This edit automatically ends tasks and timeouts that prevent programs from
shutting down and clears the Paging File on Exit.
