shut down and defrag problems since XP SP 2 update

Hi,
Since I installed the SP 2 update online my computer
doesn't shutdown properly (end task must be done several
times or it just freezes and must be shut down manually).
Also, I'm unable to defrag my computer. I'm planning to
back up the large amount of data stored on the computer
anyway, but does this update bode ill for the
future...Donna
