I am unable to use my contact list as an address book to look up email
addresses because the "Show contact list as an E-mail Address Book" is
grayed-out and won't let me check it. I can't seem to find anyone who can
help solve this issue. This essentially renders my new laptop useless for
email.

Yes, the address book is there. It is called "Outlook Address Book" - Type
MAPI. When I right click on "Contacts" in the My Contacts list and then the
"Outlook Address Book" tab the check box "Show this folder as an e-mail
address book" is grayed-out and cannot be selected.

hours trying to figure this problem out with no success. I run into the same
problem with the check box being greyed out/inaccessible under the Outlook
Address Book tab. It is quite frustrating. I have also followed the

how without knowing your Outlook version, how you created the profile, and
how you migrated your data to it.
Create a new profile from scratch. Then follow the instructions I posted.

There is also a profile titled: "ASP.NET" are suppose to delete both or one?
I am using Outlook 2003 - Part of the MS Office 2003 Standard Edition program
I purchased. Is there a way to just revise the existing profile?

from my view it is unprofessional and condescending.
2. When I came on to this site and read 'Alan 77056' question I recognized
it as being exactly the same issue I have been struggling with. That issue is
that my address book is blank although my Contacts are there and the attempts
to check off the "Show this folder as an e-mail address book" is greyed
out/inactive. I find it strange that two people would have the same issue but
there it is.
3. You insist on more information in order to help either or both of us but
yet we have supposedly not provided you with the appropriate information for
you to do so. Perhaps, you could more precise as to what you actually need or
rephrase the question.
4. I am using Outlook 2003, all my contacts appear under the Contacts field,
when I type in an email address it appears but, when I attempt to access my
address book nothing appears. It is blank. Now I have attempted several times
to go through the Contacts properties to access the Outlook Address Book tab
in order to check off the "Show this folder as an e-mail address book" but
since the field is greyed out or inaccessible I can not active this option.
5. The address book in the toolbar is blank as well as the address book in
toolbar for the send To and Cc fields. Clicking on the address book icon does
nothing.

Following your provided instructions:

1. Selected Tools in the Outlook toolbar - Selected Email Accounts from the
drop down menu - Email accounts Wizard window opened.
2. Selected "View or Change Existing Directories or address books" then
clicked on "Next". The Directories and Address Books window appeared listing:
"Outlook Address Book - MAPI" and "Personal Address Book - MAPI."
3. As per your instructions clicked on "Add..." resulting in the "Directory
or Address Book Type" appears. Selected "Additional Address Books" then
clicked on "Next."
4. "Other Address Book Types" window appears listing "Outlook Address Book"
and "Personal Address Book" with the blue highlight on "Outlook Address Book."
5. Clicked on "Next" resulting in a Microsoft Office Outlook error pop-up
window stating: "This account or directory type already exists and cannot be
specified twice." Selected "Ok" on this pop-up window. Now matter how many
times I select "Next" the error pop-up window appears.
6. Selected "Cancel" to exit the "Other Address Book Types" window, closed

I just had to re-install my contacts as my Address Book and had no problem,
but I used the following link:

I had no problem with a grayed-out checkbox. Did you remove the address
books that appear in the dialog box first? The KB 319901 lists the "Remove"
step before the "Add" step.

Following your provided instructions:

1. "We can't read minds." You may feel that this statement is factual but
from my view it is unprofessional and condescending.
2. When I came on to this site and read 'Alan 77056' question I recognized
it as being exactly the same issue I have been struggling with. That issue
is
that my address book is blank although my Contacts are there and the
attempts
to check off the "Show this folder as an e-mail address book" is greyed
out/inactive. I find it strange that two people would have the same issue
but
there it is.
3. You insist on more information in order to help either or both of us
but
yet we have supposedly not provided you with the appropriate information
for
you to do so. Perhaps, you could more precise as to what you actually need
or
rephrase the question.
4. I am using Outlook 2003, all my contacts appear under the Contacts
field,
when I type in an email address it appears but, when I attempt to access
my
address book nothing appears. It is blank. Now I have attempted several
times
to go through the Contacts properties to access the Outlook Address Book
tab
in order to check off the "Show this folder as an e-mail address book" but
since the field is greyed out or inaccessible I can not active this
option.
5. The address book in the toolbar is blank as well as the address book in
toolbar for the send To and Cc fields. Clicking on the address book icon
does
nothing.

Again, please be specific as to what you need regarding the profile. I
have
looked for the information under Tools, Actions, & File and have not
identified a link.

idea
how without knowing your Outlook version, how you created the profile,
and
how you migrated your data to it.
Create a new profile from scratch. Then follow the instructions I
posted.

Yes. You haven't followed the directions. You should not have added the
Personal Address Book Service to your profile. It is interfering. Remove it.
Restart Outlook. If your profile is still corrupt, you may also need to
remove the Outlook Address Book Service, restart Outlook, then re-add it
before you can get the service to work.

Following your provided instructions:

1. Selected Tools in the Outlook toolbar - Selected Email Accounts from
the
drop down menu - Email accounts Wizard window opened.
2. Selected "View or Change Existing Directories or address books" then
clicked on "Next". The Directories and Address Books window appeared
listing:
"Outlook Address Book - MAPI" and "Personal Address Book - MAPI."
3. As per your instructions clicked on "Add..." resulting in the
"Directory
or Address Book Type" appears. Selected "Additional Address Books" then
clicked on "Next."
4. "Other Address Book Types" window appears listing "Outlook Address
Book"
and "Personal Address Book" with the blue highlight on "Outlook Address
Book."
5. Clicked on "Next" resulting in a Microsoft Office Outlook error pop-up
window stating: "This account or directory type already exists and cannot
be
specified twice." Selected "Ok" on this pop-up window. Now matter how many
times I select "Next" the error pop-up window appears.
6. Selected "Cancel" to exit the "Other Address Book Types" window, closed
Outlook, restarted Outlook and with no change to the problem with the
address
book.
7. Selected "Contacts" file and opened the "Contacts Properties" window.
Selected the "Outlook Address Book" tab. The check box and text - " Show
this
folder as an e-mail Address Book" is greyed out and cannot be selected.
Under

I set up a new profile and suddenly I can now get my contacts list as an
address book. However I now have a new problem. Outlook2007 now behaves
strangely. It is much slower and if I switch from, say, Contacts to Mail it
grinds away for a long time, perhaps a minute or two, during which it says
"Outlook Not Responding" and then finally makes the switch.

I am using a new Dell laptop with plenty of power and memory. It has Vista
and I have installed Office 2007. As far as I know all I did was create a
new profile which solved the problem of "Show this folder as an Outlook
Address Book" being grayed-out. What could be causing this? Do I need to
reinstall Outlook?

This is all so frustrating...
