Show Desktop Icon - Opens in Notepad - ??

Right..
So I was having some trouble whilst moving some shortcuts
around. I ended up deleting the 'show desktop' icon from
my quicklaunch bar (winxp pro).

When restored it was showing me two copies... dont know why.
When deleting one, the other 'wasnt really there'.
(attempts to delete resulted in 'cannot read from source
file or disk'. When i tried to modify the properties on
that, it dissapeared.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;190355
gives instructions on how to create the thing manualy -
which I followed. Now I have the icon.
However clicking on the icon opens the SCF file up in a
notepad window - and doesnt show the desktop.

This is driving me around the bend, how can a simple
function like this be so hard to recreate??

Oh and I checked, .SCF does not have a specified file-type
- eg i'm not tying notepad.exe to the file extension.

Appreciate any help anyone can offer here.

Mark.

Ok.. further testing.
Worked fine on other usernames on my system - just not just me.
Therefore figured it was probably me-specific, meaning
probably registry. I searched for 'scf' in HKCU and found a
registered file type for scf tied to notepad.exe that
*wasnt* shown in the file types list within explorers tools
-> folder options stuff. Deleted the branch and its come right.

Maybe this should be on the knowledge base?? :/

Thanks anyway
Mark.

Hi Mark,

What is the exact key in Current User? Did you perhaps mean Local
Machine/Classes?
