On my desktop i have some icons that have no pathway, i cant delete them by
right clicking.
when i add more icons to the desktop the new one sits on top of the old icon
as if it isint there.

I have tried clear desktop, but it dosent show the old icons, it shows the
icons that have a pathway

How do i get rid of these old icons

Use Windows Explorer to open these two folders, then delete whatever .lnk
file you wish to get rid off:
- c:\documents and settings\all users\desktop
- c:\documents and settings\ausn\desktop

I have done what was suggested,

it has removed all my working icons, but i still have the unworking icons on
the desktop
every one of my icons has now made a copy of themselves that opens nothing

What else could be causing this problem

Do you think i may have to reformat the hardrive??
