should I upgrade?

Question for you folks. I've been sticking with IE 6.0 as that has worked
very well. I also use Firefox as a backup (yes, I know many prefer Firefox).

I am debating whether to upgrade to IE 8.0. First question: is it ready for
prime time?

The reason I am considering upgrading is that lately I've had some problems
with IE 6.0. Some web-sites no longer have full functionality (they do under
Firefox so I realize it is a browser issue).

I would like to stick with IE, but I'd like some feedback on IE 8.0.

Oh, also, can I upgrade directly from 6.0 to 8.0?

I use XP HOME

Final question: will it be a big shocking change going from IE6 to IE 8?

IE8 is very new, and therefore is likely less stable than a browser
which has been around for a while.

If you are not sure about whether to upgrade to IE8, why not upgrade
first to IE7, then wait a bit for IE8 to mature, e.g. when something
like IE8 SP1 is released?

Is ie8 a "released" version now, or is it still considered a "beta" or
"release candidate"?

Thanks,

Greg

Please don't top-post.

IE8 is a officially released version ... but it is still new, and new
software is normally less stable than mature software. In addition,
there is the risk that some application on your PC may not be compatible
with IE8. IMO unless there is a compelling reason to go to IE8 now, it
would be prudent to wait a bit.

I'm sorry, what does top-post mean? I couldn't find it referenced anywhere. I
won't do it anymore once I find out what it means!

And thanks for the other info.

Don't worry about the net nannies. They've got nothing better to do than try
to force *their* posting desires on people.

Worry about the "net nannies". If you insist on violating netiquette,
people who could help you might not bother.

Great! While you two spat, I still don't have an answer! So that tells me
only Tom will answer my questions now.

To upgrade to IE8, or not to upgrade to IE8? That is the question. I cannot
make your decision for you, but I can offer advice and information.

Perhaps you should try IE 7 first. It has some new features that IE6 does
not have like tabbed browsing which I love and cannot live without now and
enhanced security features. You can update right from IE6 to IE8 from
www.microsoft.com.

As far as the differences between IE6, IE7 and IE8, IE 8 includes the new
feature of tabbed browsing and has much more security enhancement features.
There are also more options to delete the cache and a feature called "in
private browsing" which keeps your current browsing session websites you go
to and history private so no one else can see it. Now I do not know if you
have kids, but if you do you may like to monitor their surfing habits so you
may not like the in private filtering. Of course you can turn it on and off.

Something else I can suggest is if you choose to upgrade to IE8 and do not
like it I think you can rollback to the previous version of IE you were using
before. Hope that helps. Let me know
