computer knowledge impaired

i just had 2000 installed on my computer. Ive only used
windows 98. I noticed on windows 98 you can do the
msconfig to change whats programs are running at startup.
i cannot find a way to change this and get these programs
off i dont need running. Also about 7 minutes after i shut
down my computer it mysteriously restarts....do i need a
priest and some holy water ?

Natively you can; Start\Settings\Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Computer
Management(Local)\System Information\Software Environment\Startup
Programs|View|Advanced, then in the "Location" column, you'll find the path
to the "Startup" location either in the "Startup" directories or from the
registry's "Run" keys.

%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
%USERPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

You can delete the shortcuts that you no longer want to run.

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

You can delete the string value for the program you no longer want to run.

You should download Mike Lin's handy little StartupCPL utility. This'll put
a "Startup" icon in the Control Panel which'll give you complete control
over what's run at startup.

Hi,

Here is a link to d/l Mike Linn's Startup CPL
http://www.sunfields.com/links/index.php?PID=23

It really works well.

You can also use the msconfig for XP
and it works the same

I want to mention about the "Mysterious shutdown", you
have got W32.Baster Worm or W32.Welchia Worm. Go to
www.symantec.com and download Removal Tools.

Good luck

Yeah, it really does work well. I use it on 98 and XP as well. I find it
much easier to use than Msconfig.

Re-read the original post. Nowhere was "shutdown" mentioned.

Also, niether of those worms cause a Windows 2000 machine to
mysteriously shutdown anyway.
