Shortly after SP2

I see people asking "Do i really need Sp2 if i always
manually update?", and some people say no. But what
happens when Microsoft release a patch a little further
down the track? (which they will). Wont that patch
require that SP2 be installed? Just like now a lot of the
updates say "update for windows xp sp1". So wont u need
SP2 to install future patches?

I suggest you install the SP2. After all, it includs all the patches
released before. And, the new feature e.g. Windows Firewall, is really good.

A valid question. I have read all about SP2 and new features and I cannot
find one thing about it necessary for users who keep their system is good
shape.

Firewall? Well it cant be better than the free stuff out there...sygate,
kerio, etc etc..
Ad Blocker?..Try avant browser which sits on IE..Has ad blocking and a ton
of other stuff . If not google toolbar etc..

what else is there thats worth all this pain of incompatibility? Let it
settle for a while is my feeling, a long while...

There are also many "behind-the-scenes" tweaks which, in my case at least,
have made everything run a lot smoother.
I would strogly advise everyone with XP to update accordingly.
Many problems with 3rd party hardware/software have been reported which
usually turn out to be that the item in question is old, or hasn't been
updated lately, or the user has malware/virus problems. Also many
software/hardware manufacturers were waiting until after SP2 was released to
send out updates.

Your right Bill, SP2 is designed for users who know nothing and don't care
to know anything about security or maintaining their system's.
