Shortcuts to folders

Why can't one ALWAYS create a shortcut to a folder directly?

Open explorer.exe and...

Highlight a file and right click. You get a drop down menu that includes
"Create Shortcut" - but if you highlight a folder and right click, you get a
drop down menu that does NOT include "Create Shortcut".

Highlight a file and click on File in the Toolbar at the top of the screen.
You get a drop down menu that includes "Create Shortcut" - but if you
highlight a folder and click on File in the Toolbar at the top of the screen,
you get a drop down menu that includes "Create Shortcut" but it is greyed out.

This would lead one to believe that WinXP doesn't allow shortcuts to
folders... but that is not true. There are at least 2 ways to make a
shortcut to a folder.

1) Make the shortcut at the same time you create the folder, while it is
still highlighted. If you click on another folder, even the same folder in
the "Folders" list, you can no longer directly make a shortcut to that folder.
2) Once you have clicked away from your folder, the ability to make a
shortcut directly is lost. To create a shortcut, make a shortcut to a file in
the folder for which you really want a shortcut, right click on the new
shortcut, click on Properties, and edit the Target to be just the folder name
and VOILA! You have your shortcut to the folder.

Why does WinXP act this way?

I get Create Folder in context menu when i right click a folder.

3-Just drag the folder with Alt key pressed
4-Drag the folder using right mouse button and choose Create shortcut here.
5-Right click > New > Shortcut > Enter folder path > Click Next > Finish

Good Luck, Ayush.

Any advice is my attempt to contribute more than I have received but I can only assure you that it works on my PC. GOOD LUCK.

Tref, try highlighting the folder in the *right* pane instead of the
left. You should then get the Create Shortcut option in your right-click
(context) menu. . .

Again, you do get the option if you work in the right pane instead of
the left :-) I mostly use the drag and drop method that Ayush mentioned,
though;, since if you create a shortcut by one of the methods above you
will need to move it anyway, so it makes more sense to move and create
all in one go :-)
