Shortcut to Desktop

I accidentally deleted the shortcut to my desktop in my toolbar.
I created a new shortcut and put it in my toolbar, but when I clicked on it,
it just opened a window containing everything on my desktop.
What I wanted it to do was bring the desktop to the forefront like it did
before. Does anyone know how to restore that feature?
