My shortcut icons have the calc.exe icon instead of the
small arrow. Is this determined by a registry setting?

You have a corrupt icon cache. To correct and prevent from coming
back, you can get a copy of the free Activicons utility from
http://www.cursorarts.com/ca_ai.html and use it to increase and
rebuild the Windows icon cache.

In ActivIcons, go to its "Desktop Controls" screen and increase the
icon cache size to at least 2048, and then rebuild the icon cache.

The options for rebuilding the cache are on 2 small round buttons at
the lower/right corner. Shut down any programs running in the
background, then click the round button farthest to the lower/right
corner (your system will reboot, and the icon cache will be cleaned
out).

You can also correct using Tweakui, though that does nothing to
increase the size of the icon cache.

- return address is altered slightly to reduce spam.

You can also right-click the desktop | Properties | Appearance | Item drop down choose Icon | drop down the size to 31. Say apply and then OK. Then do the same thing again and put the size back to 32. The calculator should be gone.
