I was notified that my Windows had update available; which I installed and
restarted computer.

After restarting computer, I get the foloowing error box after typing my
password:

The title of error box is: Explorer.exe - Entry Point not Found
The error message reads: The procedure entry point SHCreateThreadRef could
not be located in the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll

After I click OK on this error box, nothing happens for indefinite time.

Any help as how to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks much in advance,
- Atul

I am having the same problem, I happened after I was advised to update my
security through MSN. NOw my computer just hangs like your though I can still
get my programs to work through Ctr/Alt/Del Task manager, so the actually
computer is working fine, just windows XP and I can not get my computer to
start in Safe mode to go back to an earlier setting which I have been trying.
Can someone give me the commands to to type in to New tasks in the Task
manager to get to my restore point again.
I set the restore point only about 2 days ago so it will be fine.
Thanks

Same problem here too after a Windows Update on 13 October. Had no Icons or
Task bar on the desktop and was only able to get to the task manager. I did
a Windows Repair with the Windows XP CD. Was able to get back into the
system, but now it is slow and have had a few errors since. Hopefully
Microsoft will come out with some information on this soon.

the task manager. I did a Windows Repair with the Windows XP CD. Was able
to get back into the system. Now it is very slow with several errors. At
least I can do a back up. Hopefully Microsoft will come up with a fix soon.

I have the same problem. What I did was a repair from the Windows XP CD. I
was able to recover the desktop. Although I had an error upon restart, my cd
software doesn't work, and the system is slower. Microsoft told me I
shouldn't have done the repair. I should have gone to the control panel
(control.exe) through the task manager and removed the updates. Although, I
couldn't get it to work and got the "no entry point found" when I tried it.

I am in the process of reapplying service pack 2 and hoping the problems
will be corrected.

Microsoft said that one problem that might have led to this problem is
having the automatic download and install option set for Windows Update. It
should be set for automatic download and then notify for install. Then
disable anti-virus sofware before you install any update.

I have tried what has been suggested with going to control.exe in the task
manager, but more errors come up including saying that control.exe is not
there.
Please can someone advise what to do. If I take my hard disk drive out and
have it backed up as a slave. will this work so that I can reformat my hard
drive>

After the repair, I reapplied service pak 2 and other updates. I had to
reinstall the CD and audio software. I am back to normal.

One reason Microsoft gave for the error was the automatic update download
and install. Set your computer to automatic windows update download and
notify to install. Disable any anti-virus software prior to installing
Windows Update.

I had the same problem on Oct 14/2004 (Windows Security Automatic Update).
After restart my computer , I get this message:
Explorer.exe - Entry point not found
The procedure entry point SHCreateThreadRef could not be located in the
dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll
How do I fix this problem? But I don't have a Windows XP CD (O/S Windows XP
in my computer is preinstall)
Thanks.
