Shell32.dll exception

Cliff Lewis

I put a new Maxtor hard drive in my system and used the manufacturer's
software to clone the operating system and files from the old drive to
the new one. For the most part it is working with the old drive
disabled, but when I try to call up "Safely Remove Hardware," I get an
error message:

An exception occurred while trying to run "shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL
hotplug.dll"

How do I fix this? Is it a sign that something went wrong in the
cloning process? Are there other problems that typically fall through
the cracks in cloning a disk?

Thanks,
Cliff Lewis

I have the same problem. I recently cloned my hard drive using the Seagate
software which is basically Acronis True Image. This is probably the same
software that Cliff used (since Seagate bought Maxtor). The clone worked
fine. I have been running about two months now on the new drive and this is
the only problem I seem to have. My thumb drive is a Sandisk which lights up
when it is connected. The "safely remove hardware" seems to work because the
light goes off but then I get the error.

Hi, I've had the exact same problem as described above. Is there a way of
repairing this without doing a repair install of XP?

Thanks in advance for any help,

Rob
