Shell is in crashing loop

We had an XP Gold machine (completely unpatched) where the shell keeps
crashing; as soon as it crashes it'll restart and crash again. After
sending the error report to MS, it came back and said zipnall.exe was
probably out of date - this program wasn't even installed, but I tracked it
down and installed the newest version and then uninstalled it. Problem
still happens. Ran antivirus scan and cleared up a few trojans, ran adaware
(nothing), fully updated (SP1 and hotfixes) the machine and ran chkdsk a
couple of times (fixed a couple of index problems). Problem still happens.
No unusual processes running; nothing unusual in Add/Remove Programs. The
exact error is:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Application Error
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1000
Date: 4/28/2004
Time: 1:27:23 PM
User: N/A
Computer: DABB
Description:
Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2800.1221, faulting module
kernel32.dll, version 5.1.2600.1106, fault address 0x00013887.

Outside of reinstalling the OS, anyone have any ideas?

As far as I can tell, even though Microsoft suggested that zipnall was the
problem, it wasn't initially installed on this machine. Neither was
bugtoaster. For what it's worth, the machine runs okay in safe mode, so I
guess the executables themselves are okay.

Your computer is at least SP-1 with some other patch.

Also does it happen in safe mode? What do you do to make it crash? (eg right click something?)

I checked a couple of other computers that were fresh builds with SP Gold, then had SP1 and all WindowsUpdate patches applied, and the explorer.exe version is 6.0.2800.1221. This computer started doing this when it was back at Gold level. It does not do this in safe mode. As soon as a user logs in (any user) without doing anything it will start the crashing loop - no keyboard or mouse action at all.

None of the things that came up in that search are relevant to this machine or the software installed on it.

If it works in safe mode then it's a startup program or driver.
