shell.dll

I am still concerned because I keep getting the message that
windows\system32\shell.dll was either allowed or blocked. Isn't this an
important file that keeps my computer safe?

Hi Aries,

I can't tell from your post if it's ok or not. There's at least 4 threats
that use this filename - lots of spyware use OS binary names to try to trick
people.

Which threat is being detected?

Thanks for trying Windows Defender,
Joe

I am using Windows Anti-Spyware (Beta) not Windows Defender. It frequently
gives conflicting information. The window pops up and says spyware blocked
and then inside it says it has been allowed. (or vice-versa, I can't remember
which) When I clicked on the link for more information it came up with a
blank window. But most of the time it just raises its head and then sneaks
back down quickly. If you're not looking when it's up then you might miss
it. But I can tell you for sure it says windows\system32\shell.dll

Bill Sanderson told me that they are working on it. But I am still
concerned because it keeps popping up.

I'd like to hear what happens if you move to Windows Defender. That's beta2
of Microsoft antispyware, and as a minimum it should remove the confusing
messages, and I'm expecting it to remove the alert completely unless there
really is malware involved.

I have downloaded it, run it several times, and the results are amazing. It
found so much. Then I ended up "repairing" my Office 2003 to get back to
normal, defragmenting, the whole works. But it's worth it.... again, hats
off to you all who have been working so hard on it.

Have a great President's Day.......

I am in awe.
