sharing files between pc's while one is configured with a VPN

I have 2 pc's. One for home using Windows XP and one for
work using Windows 2000. I am trying to share files and a
printer on my home pc to the work pc on the same home
lan. I can see the computer name but I can't see the
printer or shared folder both ways from home pc to work pc
and vice versa. When I try map a network drive to the
shared folder I make sure my work pc is not signed onto
the vpn. Is there a way to share the printer and folders
between the 2 pc's?

I assume that your printer is connected to home PC. From
your home computer, right click on the printer>sharing
then you need to share the printer first. Then from your
work PC you can add a network printer.
I hope that will work.

Thanks,
Terry

I have a similar setup, although, I'm using XP Pro and Xp Home. Unless you have an actual network setup, with a hub and/or router, I had to use the exact same user account name. For example, if I used User1 on home machine, I had to login as User1 on work machine in a workgroup environment

As long as I'm logged in on both machines as User1, I can access files both ways and share a printer connection. Hope this helps.

Tom,

You don't say what VPN client you're using. Some are configurable to bypass the VPN software for Local LAN addresses. You may have to get your system administrator to configure this option.

Glen,

Thanks for your help although I am still having a
problem. My work pc (2000) is on a domain while my home
pc (XP Pro) is in a workgroup. I had previously changed
my home pc's workgroup to the same name as my work pc's
domain name which enabled me to see the pc on the network
but I can't see the files. I changed my user account name
on my home pc to be the same login as my work pc but I
still can't see my shared files on my home pc. Any
additional advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Tom
