Sharing external drive

Setup: Win xp pro sp/2 (freshly updated)
P4 3.2 GB 2gb ram (in all cases)
MyBook wd 500gb ext drive connected via usb2

I'm pretty sure this is a new problem but I have been away for several
mnths so the computers have sat idle but are now brought up to date.

I'm connecting the cited external drive to one P4. Then thru the
sharing mechanism creating a share \\name\name-ext.

Set permissions as on all my shares so that a common user has full
access.

When I attempt to access from another P4 on same home network I get
first a lenthy pause (about a minute) and finally a message with some
boilerplate about permissions but followed by the real error:

\\name\name-ext is not accessable. You might not have permission
to use this network resource.. contact admin blah blah

Not enough server storage is available to process this command.

Anyone here who has run into this before?

I don't think the first part of the error means much since the share
is setup exactly as all other shares with the same permissions and all
other shares are accessable.

Check IRPStackSize in this location

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters

If necessary, create the key.

If present, may need to delete the key in registry, reboot and then
re-create with value of 15

Also, go to Tools, View, remove tick from simple file sharing

May need to also run Network Setup Wizard

Unchecked long ago on all machines, but double checked anyway.

Do you mean to do these steps on the machine with the share? Or on all
machines?

I guess you mean all machines, but I'm wondereing then why the network
would suddenly develop this problem?

Saruman... I'm not adept at all with regedit. I'm a little confused
here. If I create a `key' as you specify I get a subdirectory under
Parameters that I can name IRPStackSize and create a value inside of
15.

Ending with ..\Parameters\IRPStackSize\default .... 15

I suspect above is NOT what you mean.

Or I can create a `string value' of IRPStackSize with value 15
... ending with ..\Parameters\IRPStackSize...15

See these two screen shots of both examples and let me know how you
meant to proceed please.

Your second assumption is correct.

Cant see your images though.

This needs to be done on the machine that the external drive is connected
to.

Some software is the cause of this problem. Either Norton / Symantec or
maybe Acronis as well.

Apparently the owner of that machine moved the perl interpreter so
suddenly none of my cgi work... They will display now.

Thanks ..:

What do those softwares do that cause the problem?

Make changes to files linked to this reistry entry.

Did this solve the problem??

No, not yet.

Make changes to files linked to this reistry entry.

Is there any chance you can be a little more verbose? Many things
change files yet do not cause a network problem.

Those registry entries did not exist here so changing files linked to
them can't have been happening here.

Can you spell out what Norton or acronis tools might do that would
hinder a windows network in that way?

And why it would happen only when accessing the external usb mass
storage from a network connection?

Afraid I dont know the answer to those questions.

I was only responding to your question about the external USB Drive because
I sorted my problem by adding or changing this key on my own mini network to
what was recommended about the IRPStackSize registry key.

In my case, Symantec Corporate caused the problem on most of my machines but
after I installed Acronis on another, I had the same problem. Can't help any
further, sorry!
