Backup app can't write to shared drive

The app (Acronis True Image Home) is on xp pro and is attempting to write to
a folder on a shared external hard drive connected to Small Bus. Server 03.

The error is that the app doesn't have the needed permissions.

I use my admin login when attempting this. The share has me listed in
permissions and I am the current owner of the share as well. Acronis
support says its an xp issue.

What is needed to allow the app to access this network share?

You should run some experiments, e.g.
- Attempt to write a file directly on this share instead of using Acronis.
- Use Acronis to write a file on an internal drive.
- Use Acronis to write a file on a share located on an internal drive.

I havent used Acronis software but it sounds like your problem might be due
to the account the acronis service(s) run under not having enough permissions.

Open services.msc and check the credentials the service is set to run under.
These credentials would need to have permissions to access the the share also.

Some backup software like Backup Exec has a wizard which allows you to
specify the account to be used for backup jobs.

Good luck!

That was interesting. I just tried to create a text file to the share and
was denied. Why would it do that? The client machine has simple file
sharing set. Would that matter?

You might need to make sure the NTFS permissions are set correctly too, not
just the share permissions.

Yes, because you are really using Guest Authentication. Thus, the
permissions for the Guest account apply to the shared folder

From the SBS, my admin account is listed with full control. I just enabled
and added Guest with full privileges and that would not allow me to create a
text file from xp either.

I did the opposite. The NTFS permissions were set but I ignored the users
for the share. Thanks for walking me through this.

There is an overall issue here. Initially you assumed that
Acronis TrueImage was the culprit, even though the Acronis
help desk suggested otherwise. When solving problems
then it helps to break the problem down to its smallest
components. Instead of trouble shooting a complex
application such as TrueImage, start with the simplest
components such as manually writing a file to the target
disk. This would make it much, much easier to find the
solution to your problem.

No problem. Glad you got it sorted.
