Sharing documents over the internet?

Running Ms Office 2003 on Windows XP Home sp2

We are a team of two people working on the same big Word-project. We
want to save our project on a server/webhotel, where we can open the
files to make corrections and adjustments, and of course write new
documents, that belong to the project.

We need the documents to be writeprotected if the other person is
working on that particular document.

We tried this on a server, and it worked beautifully for some weeks,
but now it has stopped working. We can still ftp our documents to and
from the server, but that is quite annoying.

What do we need? We only want to chare documents, not email, calendars
and so on.

If this is not the right group, please tell me where to ask?
