Need Tips for Word07 templates among multiple users

Ever since we have switched to Office2007 in our office, we are having issues
with opening documents that are attached to templates on our server IF on a
computer that does not have access to the server. At first this seemed to be
affecting those who took work home, but now it is an issue with deliverables
to a client. Considering we are working with manuals over 100 pages in
length, this is not a simple thing to simply not use templates at all (they
tried that before I started working here and that was a MESS!) but we need to
have our documents be able to open properly on any computer regardless of
where the template is located.

For the time being, we are copying all the styles from the template into the
document and re-attaching the document to just the basic Normal template
before delivering the document to the client.

I have worked with Word for 14 years, and I don't recall ever having
documents flat-out refuse to open just because of an unavailable template, so
I need to know if this is a new issue for Word07, and how to better manage
our template usage so both colleagues and clients are not running into this
problem.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

It is not possible to have a document not attached to a template. Where a
specific template is not attached to the document, the normal template will
be used instead.

There have been reports of Word being very slow to open documents that have
templates located on a server and those templates are not available, but
they should open eventually. One possibility would be to upload the
templates required from the server to the local PC as part of a log-in
script, leaving the users' normal templates unaffected so they can be used
properly. The users could then work from locally based templates that are up
to date and should not experience the network delay, even if the template is
not available.

Where can I or my IT person learn more about the log-in script that you
mention? This won't help as far as deliverables to the client, but it could
well help put the brakes on some of our outside writers continuing to use the
wrong old template.

You should consult a forum (or the support) concerned with your networking
software. This is not something that can be achieved from Word.
