Sharing access denied -Too confused or stupid to figure out sharin

Help please!

I had to reinstall Windows XP Pro & SP2 (with Microsoft tech help) on PC1.
Since then, although I have the wireless network running & the internet
shared with laptop (running Media Edition 2005 - all updates current) and
another PC, I can no longer run a program installed on the PC1 as shared from
laptop. PC1 has wireless broadband USB modem attached that others share, and
connects to the router with a cable.

Prior to the above Windows debacle, I could.

PC1 has Program X installed that I want to run/access from laptop (rather
than using laptop hard drive space to install). In fact, since the above, I
can't access any program folders I've set to share on PC1 from laptop. I get
the message:

"\\computername\program(folder name) is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this
server to find out if you have access permissions."

Access Denied

All above without quotes.

I've read through lots of posts here & tried Help & Support on PC1 & laptop,
& I thought I had my settings & permission correct, but obviously, I don't.

I ran Network Setup Wizard on both PC1 & laptop. The problem I encountered
is that as I ran this on PC1, it disabled (sometimes) ICS & laptop had no
internet access (wireless adapter showed connected to network with good
signal strength, but "limited or no connectivity" - for internet). I've been
through this so……….. many times, I don't remember if it disabled all the
time. I thought it was because the wireless broadband modem is attached to
PC1 rather than router. Once I re-enabled ICS, laptop had access to internet
(but don't know if it will "force" USB modem to dial if PC1 not already
signed on).

On PC 1 with Program X, I disabled SFS, and then shared the program folder
on PC1 that I am trying to access from laptop, (along with 2 others I tried
to access in case the problem is specific to the individual program).

On laptop, under My Network Places the folder I'm trying to "run" from
laptop appears with the above-cited access denied message. Somewhere I
thought I read something about User accounts & passwords on the 2 computers,
so right now, both Users have same name - my 1st name), & no password. The
Widows firewalls on both PC1 & laptop have the program's .exe file as an
exception (but not other files I shared for test).

Sorry if this is too long, but I tried to cover things I think I've seen
asked by "helper," including MVPs when trying to help others.

Is there an easy to understand tutorial for those of us who don't know
anything about file sharing, permissions, etc.?

I've read some of PChuck's Network sites (below are 2), however, I may be
too tired or frustrated for them to make any sense (my problem of course)

Hi
This does not relate directly to the share problem.
But you would have a better chance for a good connection, and sharing if you
would switch to External Ethernet and uniform Network rather than using USB
Modem and thus probably employing double NAT.

Thank you Jack. I don’t understand what you mean by switching to
“External Ethernet and uniform Network rather than using USB Modem and thus
probably employing double NAT.â€

Here’s my situation: We live in an area where neither cable nor DSL are
available for high-speed Internet; my only option is wireless broadband
through Verizon Wireless, that’s why I’m using the USB modem.

Hi
It is Not clear to ne your current Network topology and how the local
Wireless works.
However in general you can share files through a Network, you can Not run a
program that is installed on computer A from computer B unless you use a
Remote Control Program.

Thank you. I will research Remote Control Program. What confused me is that
until I had to reinstall Windows XP Pro & SP2 on computer on which program
resides, I could run it from laptop through network.

The current configuration is: USB for wireless broadband is attached to PC1
running XP Pro SP2. Wireless router wired to PC1. Laptop (& PC3) accesses
wireless router with wireless adapters & share internet. Right now I can see
all 3 from laptop listed under workgroups. I can see the folders I've set to
share on PC 1 from laptop & PC3, I have access denied when trying to open;
even a document folder.

Do you know of a "File Sharing for Dummies" book, website, tutorial, etc?
I've seen searching for almost a week, & have spent countless hours trying to
figure out why what I had working before reinstall debacle now does not work.

I think I’m becoming more & more ignorant on this sharing issue. I can’t
even get printer connected to laptop to share with XP Pro machine (PC1). XP
Pro machine will share hubby’s printer, but his PC ( PC3) runs XP Home. The
laptop’s printer is shared, but does not appear under printers on XP Pro
(PC1). When I tried to add laptop’s printer to XP Pro’s printers (where I
can see hubby’s printer on PC3), I get a Guest logon pop-up. I’ve checked &
unchecked SFS in Folder Options so….. many times.

The laptop runs Media Edition 2005 SP2, & is up to date on updates. PC1,
which has the program I could once share through network & run from laptop,
is running XP Pro SP2. After reinstalling XP Pro on PC1 I needed Microsoft
tech assistance to get SP2 installed, & Microsoft sent an .exe file, which
looked like a registry editor running in a DOS window. After that SP2
installed (in Safe Mode). Could this “program†Microsoft sent have changed
something that is making it impossible for me to share between laptop & XP
Pro (PC1); even a printer?

Does this make any sense?

Since PC3 is running XP Home, the only way to share anything is to use the
Guest account.
Hence, the Guest account on PC3 must be enabled and should have a password.
When the logon screen appears, you enter the password for the Guest account
on the remote system.

SP2 made some changes in the way that sharing works. However, MS did not
update Help & Support to reflect these changes.
Follow the detailed instructions in MVP Chuck or MVP Jack's websites. It
isn't all that hard, but computers are remarkably intolerant of the
slightest mistake.
And, FYI, I am well well well past 40. In fact I can barely remember being
that young.

Thank you Jim.

PC3 (hubby's computer in his outside cave) only needs to be on network for
the internet sharing. It's PC1 & laptop I really need to get set up so they
share 1 program & a printer for now.

I've read some of Chuck's Blog, & some is above my head, but I may not be
looking in right place. Do you have a link for Jack's?

BTW, justpast40 is part of an email address I set up when 1st getting online
in 1996 : - ). I'm pretty sure I've aged a decade in the last week or so
I've been working on this. The most frustrating thing is that it worked
before the reinstall debacle.

I may be making some progress. I'm getting 1 error if I try to access a
shared file on laptop from PC1, & a different error if I try to access
Program X on PC 1 from laptop. I'm hoping it means that since I'm not
getting the same error as I once was that I'm getting somewhere.

You give me hope though, if you're of the pre-computer generation & you
think Chuck's & Jack's sites are easy enough to follow for those of us who
remember computers, as taking up entire rooms, there's hope still.

I suppose that I should mention that I began using computers in the mid 70s.
I spent some 20 years in the IT business, wrote lots of programs, and was a
VMS System Manager for 13 years
VMS is the very distant ancestor of NT.

Miraculous!! Maybe the ghosts are gone

All of a sudden, this AM, I could open a shared doc file located on PC1,
from laptop. It appears under My Network Places. I can also "open" PC1 (XP
PRO) when viewing workgroup on laptop & the same shared doc file appears, & I
can open from there also. After "opening" PC1 from within workgroup, the
shared program file is there. I can open the file, but when I click on the
icon which runs the program, I just get an hourglass as if it is going to
start, but does not. Also located within that program folder is an
executable file for a direct email link. If I click that, it runs, & I just
sent an email from there for program help, so I know it works.

Any suggestion on why I can't run the program when clicking on its
executable icon yet I can run the direct email executable?

Stupid question, but exactly where should I see the shared program & the
shared doc folder? Should it be in My Network Places where the doc folder is
residing, or do I have to access by opening PC1 from within workgroup? If
it's supposed to be My Network Places, can someone please help me figure out
what I've done wrong?
