SharePoint Services error

Eduardo

(I'll try a different Newsgroup - no Post Replies on
previous postings ???)

At some point after making some changes to our web site
(after upgrading to Office 2003) when attempting to open
my local site version I got the followinfg error message:

"An error ocurred accesing your Windows SharePoint
services site files" - then it gives instructions to
Authors and Webmaster referring to the event log. The
event log reads:

"The description for Event ID ( 1000 ) in Source (
Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 Error Reporting ) cannot
be found. The local computer may not have the necessary
registry information or message DLL files to display
messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use
the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see
Help and Support for details. The following information
is part of the event: frontpg.exe, 11.0.5516.0, 3f1f5d5f,
fpsrvutl.dll, 11.0.5523.0, 3f21cf58, 0, 0000cba1."

I open my Web backup file and all is well until I try to
troubleshoot an existing problem with the remote site.

I don't subscribe to SharePoint Services. Why is
referring to it?

How can I correct this?

Thanks

Eduardo

The error messages are global
(thus the text may be referring to WSS but really be related to the FP SE)

Also when you open a FP 2003 Disc Based Web (DBW) you are in fact using the serverless WSS SE (6.02.6353) as the FP SE (to support
new features like Dynamic Web Templates, etc)

What type of FP site are you opening?
(DBW, server based web, local or remote)
and how are you opening it?
(Recent Sites, Network places, Browsing to it in File Open Site, Task Pane - Getting Started, or browsing to it in IE and using Edit
w/ FP)

Try some repairs before you open your FP & site
1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
- in FP 2003 you need to look in the super hidden folder
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\FrontPageTempDir
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
Usually in %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache
3) Install all Service Packs for your OS, IE, MS Office / FP and your Video card
(Windows Update and Office Update sites, plus your video card supplier site)
4) Open FP and Disable or Uninstall any FP Addins,
5) Open your FP Web/Site and run a Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks
(try the different methods to open a site)

Thanks for the reply,

I've been handling our company web site www.3iintll.com
for some time. I started with FP 2000 and the way I've
done it is by making needed changes into my local
files/pages then connecting to the remote server with our
web host and uploading/updating files @ the remote site.
So I guess the type of FP site I am dealing with is
local, right? I have opened the site from Recent Files,
or from My Webs. I have copied/moved the folder to a
different location in my disc and I get the same message.
Sometimes I also get a Time Out message. ??? No problems
opening the remote site, in fact I copied the remote
folders and brought them into my computer so that I could
have a fresh copy of my site locally.

Ever since I upgraded to FP 2003 things behave a little
different than FP 2000 and I am not sure if I have to
observe different procedures. I will follow your advice
in deleting the Temp Files you mentioned. No Addins
installed.

Mind you that I am not a professional in this field and
for instance I don't know what SE stands for. Thanks again

Eduardo

Sounds like locally you have a DBW at
C:\......\My Webs\
or something like
C:\......\My Webs\3i Web
Confirm what you have as a path to the Web when you open your local PC version of the web

If your hosted site has the FP SE, open it in FP using File Open Site and entering: http://www.3iintll.com/
Then publish a new copy to say C:\3iWeb, and try to open that (File Open Site and browse to C:\3iWeb)

Do not copy of move file outside of FP
- the only way to correctly "move" or upload files in FP is to use File Publish Web
(if your hosted site has the FP SE)

PS
No server found at www.3iintll.com
(could be it is a local company Intranet, not a site on the internet)

Thanks Stefan,

So, in FP I open my site, by the way the web site is
http://www.3iintl.com, I had a typo, they do support FP
SE but I don't think they handle SharePoint Services as
is not displayed at my admin page, and once the site is
open should I make changes there and publish or should I
save a fresh copy locally and make changes then publish?

Is it best to make changes locally or directly at the
remote?

Again, I want to thank you for taking the time to helping
me.

It is always safer to make them locally, then publish to remote,
- but if you are careful you can also just work online

My purpose in opening your online site in FP was for your to publish a clean version to your local PC to see if the error was
cleared up
