shared printer problem

I have two computers at home, running W2K pro and W95,
connected through DLink DI-704P router. I have
HP Deskjet 722C printer connected through a parallel port
to the W2K computer. The printer is set as shared. I
cannot print to it from W95. I deleted it and added using
windows wizard several times. The wizard sees the printer
ok. Both computer can talk to each other through ping
command as well as I can open all shared files from both
locations.

On both machines I have appropriate HP drivers installed,
i.e. W95 driver on Win 95 box, etc. On W2K machine I have
a message saying that since the printer is shared I may
need additonal driver installed for a different OS.
However, when I try to istall the W95 driver on W2K box,
it will not install. If I try to do it through a dialog
box opening under pritner/properties/sharing etc. it asks
for a *.inf file. I can find the file using search in
Windows Explorer searching for *.inf, yet the installation
package does not recognize it somehow.

I posted this a couple of days ago forgetting to add that
I do have the drivers installed on both machines. Then I
was away for a couple of days. I am trying to figure out
what is going on, but have run out of new ideas.

Will appreciate any suggestion(s).

Your problem is simple. You have the wrong drivers
installed on the wrong box. I have seen this before and it
is common. You need to goto HP's website and download the
driver for w95, and w2k. Manually install these drives
using the add printer wizard in the control panel. make
sure you tell the w2k system that it's a local printer and
then share it, then tell the w95 machine that its a
network printer and install the drivers you downloaded
from HP, instead of letting the drive be installed from
the W2k system. This should fix the problem.

D.J.,
Essentially I have done what you suggest. I have
downloaded the W2K driver to W2K box and W95 driver to W95
machine. They install OK from the driver provided
installation wizards. I have no problem printing to DJ722c
from W2K machine. However, despite seeing the printer from
W95, adding it as a network printer (using browse for the
path), everything seems to be ok, until trying to print a
test page. Here, the computer displays a message “the page
was sent” and asks if it was printed OK. Nothing happens,
and on both computers there are no documents in the queue.
When trying to run a troubleshooting package from W95 box
it says that it is unable to find the printer, or
something to this effect. It must be something trivial,
but, as I said, I cannot find what it is.
