Good evening!
In a single computer, workgroup set up ( such as my computer at home! ) is
it really necessary for 'c:\' to be shared as 'C$' and for 'c:\windows' to
be shared as 'ADMIN$'? There will be no remote access to this machine.
Pretty sure that this is not necessary and is a security risk. Especially
on a broadband connection!
Also, installed and ran the free hfnetchk v3.86 from Shavlik Technologies on
my system ( as well as on several other systems ) and it told me that
several hotfixes were not applied (
MS05-013, -015, -018, -032, -043, -045, -046, -047, -048, -049, -050, -051
and -052 to be exact! ). When I run mbsa 2.0 all patches are listed as
installed - including the 13 that hfnetchk says are not! The file
'mssecure.cab' was downloaded successfully and is dated 11/13/2005 ( ran it
today - have the same results no matter on what day it was run over the last
two weeks. I have run this several times at several locations on several
different systems ).
I am asking because I have several WINXPPro SP2 systems that are
installed/patched in several different ways [ 1) simple WINXP Pro OEM
install - then install SP2 from CD-MEDIA - then install patches from the MS
Windows Update web site, 2) simple slipstreamed install of WINXP Pro w/SP2
on the OEM CD-MEDIA followed by patches from MS web site, 3) self-made
slipstreamed WINXP Pro SP2 disk from OEM disk, and 4) slipstreamed WINXP Pro
SP2 plus patches on CD-MEDIA ] and when running hfnetchk I get the exact
same results - those specific 13 patches are listed as 'Patch Not Installed'
and then some .dll file ( hlink.dll in the case of MS05-013 ) is listed as
'invalid checksum and its file version [5.2.3790.227] is equal to what is
expected [5.2.3790.227]'. This is not the case when running MBSA 2.0 (as
mentioned, all is hunky-dory ). I have not been able to find any
information concerning any known issues with the free hfnetchk v3.86 and
this problem.
Last question - when I installed hfnetchk v3.86 I was advised that this is -
and I can not remember the exact wording, sorry - updating a previously
installed version. I was not giving the screen where you are given the
option to do a repair install or a removal ( like you get sometimes when you
run the installer with some applications that are actually already
installed ). What version is already installed to create that 'warning'?
Sorry for the ignorance!
Thank you in advance!
