Shared Drive Problem in WinXP

D

deviliscious

2 PCs both running winxp sp1 under 1 workgroup. let's say client is pc1
and server is pc2.

sharing method: not simple

shared folder set permission (on sharing tab) to let's say pc2user.

first thing i did was map network drive, specify login as different
user, entered servername/username and password. I get error that
"network folder specified is currently mapped using a different name
and password..." even if there were no mapped drives. searched KB,
solution was to have sp1. that didnt help because i have all the latest
updates.

2nd thing i did was manage passwords in pc1 and entered pc2user name
and password. result - didnt work.

3rd thing i did was create a user in pc2 that is identical (both name
and password) with a user in pc1. didn't work.

i think i followed all your recommendations in your blog but it's still
not working. i'm hitting a blank wall.

please help

OK, I would guess the KB hit you got was 812793? Did you call Microsoft for the
Hotfix ("charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled
if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will
resolve your problem")? This may be one legit case where that's where you want
to start.

I cannot call msft without incurring so much cost as i live outside the
US.

But I somehow solved the problem. I set permission on the folder
security. (waht I did before was just in the share permission.)

i guess i did not know the diff between permissions on share and
permissions on folder. can u explain or point me out to a site that
does? not really a techie.

thanks

With workgroup authentication, which requires a local account on the server, you
need both Sharing - Permissions (for network rights), and Security (for local
rights), setup properly. You need either Everyone, or the specific account,
setup with sufficient rights in BOTH lists.

A typical setup is to grant Full rights to Everyone, on the share (Sharing -
Permissions), then grant restrictive rights to the individual accounts, on the
local folder (Security). Resultant network rights are the negative sum of the
two.

If the files and folders in question have been properly setup and shared as
above, and you're getting only partial access (maybe Read-Only, although you
intend to grant Read-Write access), check both lists.

Does that help any?

sorry but what exactly do you mean by "negative sum of the two."

The resultant network rights are the more restrictive of the two, if different.

In other words, if Everyone has Full Control for Share Permissions, and an
individual account has Read-Only for Folder Security, the result, for the
individual account, will be Read-Only.

There is a hotfix for this symptom??
I have known this problem for a long time, and I know how to fix it.

Just open a cmd prompt and type in:
net use

You will see the share listed without a drive letter, usually as a IPC$.
To get rid of it type in:
net use /delete 'sharename'

Now you are not "Currently mapped" to this share anymore and it should work
just fine.
