Share Modem Connection

I'm trying to setup a new WinXP without a modem by networking it
to my Win2000 system (which has a modem) so that I can update
the WinXP software.

After I setup my Modem/ISP connection for sharing, with the
two systems connected with a cross over cable, there was
some communication from the XP over the Win2K modem.

That was last night. This morning, due to the modem connection
sharing, I made changes because my normal connection with my
laptop (Win 98SE) didn't work. The changes were primarily
with my ZoneAlarm firewall.

I have the XP and Win2K systems talking over the "Workgroup"
shared files, but I can't seem to get the XP system to see
the modem on the Win2K system. I'm not sure where to look.
I have tried terminating both system's firewall software, but
it still won't work.

And even before I disabled the firewalls, I wasn't seeing
any Alerts on the Win2K system indicating that anything has
been blocked...

Can anyone give me a lead as to where to look?

TIA

The only way you used to be able to stop Zone Alarm was to change the "Start
with Windows" option to no and then reboot, otherwise all you do is stop the
control panels but not the firewall itself. If that's what is on the W2K
machine that may be one problem.

I assume you used to connect the Laptop in the same way you now connect the
XP machine, ie crossover cable?

Your best bet in this case I think is to look at the properties for the
network (LAN) connections under settings for the XP machine and see if it is
set to automatic. The Network card on the ICS (W2K) machine will always get
the address 192.168.0.1 and your other two machines will get addresses in
that range - so it shouldn't matter if they are 192.168.0.2 etc and fixed,
but these settings are harder to make with W98.

With 98 for example you have to reboot every setting change, W2K fixed that
and XP is much like W2K.

Also I've seen instances where 98 will appear unconnected and the 20 minutes
later for no apparent reason it's working, so don't rule out the possibility
of some intermittent glitch if the XP machine is still working alright.
