I have two computers connected in a network via a Lynksys router.

One computer is a Compaq EVO 800c running Windows Xp Professional Service
Pak 2

It has an eithernet and a wireless adapter. The wireless adapter is
inactive and the connection is via the eithernet adapter.

The IPconfix and Browstat results for this computer are as follows:

The second computer is a Thinkpad T43P laptop also running windows XP

It has three adapters. The bluetooth and eithernet adapters are not being
used. The computer is connected to the router by a wireless adapter.

The utility results are as follows:

I have run set up many times and can find no problem.

Yesterday I had the compter name Ira where it would see the computer named
Ken and had Ira sharing data with folders on Ken. Using Ira, I could move
files back and forth beteween the two computers. Ken could see the other
computer and would not share any folders on Ira. When I tried to access
Ira from Ken I got a message as follows:

\\Ira is not accessable. You might not have peremision to use this network
resource. Contact administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions.

The network path was not found.

Personal firewalls have been shut down on both machines.

Last night I shut both computers and the router down. Today when I brought
them up, the Ira computer could not see the Ken computer. I determined that
the workgrouo which had been set as HARRISHOME when the computer was shut
down had changed to Wprkgroup. I changed it back and rebooted. Now Ira can
see Ken, but I get the same message is is quoted above on both computers.

Questions - Why does that name of the workgroup change by itself at times
and what am I doing wrong that prevents my being able to share folders on
these 2 machines.

Simple share has been disabled on both.

Any assistance will be appreciated.

Ken,

First, Simple File Sharing ("Simple share"?) is not relevant to visibility
problems which you are having.

You omitted "browstat status" from Ken. Diagnostics like "browstat status" are
most useful when performed consistently.

For my money, your problem comes from having IPX/SPX on Ira. Do you truly need
IPX/SPX? Windows Networking works quite well with only NetBIOS Over TCP/IP.

What personal firewalls do you have on each computer (disabled or no)? What
antivirus products?

Thanks for your response.

I read your information page and made the following adjustments on both
machines.

1. disabled all items from transportation list except the following.

Client for Microsoft Networks.
File and Printer Sharing For Microsoft Networks.

QoS Packet Scheduler (QPS is optional, and has caused no known
problems).

Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).

2. NetBIOS Over TCP/IP was enabled

Since the first message I discovered that the firewall I had disabled on Ira
had been turned back on when I rebooted. I shut it down again and Ira can
again share files with Ken. Nothing has changed as far as Ken's ability to
access Ira.

Fire walls -

Ira Zone Alarm - disabled
Ken - Windows firewall - Disabled

The router is supposed to have a built in firewall.

Anti Virus - Norton 2005 on both machines.

In the first message I also failed to say that both machines are able to
access the internet via the router.

Ken,

First, with Ken being in workgroup HARRISHOME, and Ira in Workgroup, you have a
problem there.

Second, if there is a firewall on the router, it only protects your computers
from Internet traffic. The device connecting the computers on your LAN is just
a switch - no routing there, and no firewall.

But you do have Zone Alarm on Ira, which you say you have disabled. Zone Alarm
is known for not accepting being disabled. Next, if you have Norton Antivirus
2005 on both computers, you have a problem. NAV 2005 includes worm protection,
which is known to cause problems with file sharing.

Thanks for your response.

Apparently I provided the wrong copy of browstat.txt from Ira. The correct
data is as follows"

Status for domain HARRISHOME on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{0914E01F-A101-470E-87DE-FFFB26AA79C1}
Browsing is active on domain.

As I stated in my first post Ira seems to have changed from HARRISHOME to
Workgroups by itself. I apparently ran Browstat before I changed it back.
Both are on HARRISHOME.

The device connecting the ADSL modem to the computers is a Linksys
Wireless-G Broadband Router (WRT54G) According to the manufacturer it is a
combination Router, Switch, and Access Point and provides a SPI Firewall and
WPA encryption.

As for Zone Alarm, I could not find any way to just disable it so I shut it
down.

I know that Norton has the worm protection and while I was not certain if it
would be a proble, I turned off that feature to be safe.

I am aware that the router firewall only protects against internet traffic.
Since the rounter has the encryption and both machines are in my home and
my wife and I are the only ones here, internet trafic is all the protection
I want from the firewall.

Any more ideas will be appreciated.

Ken

For information of any who are having a similar problem. I determined that
the simple file sharing had been turned off on Ken, but not on Ira. I
turned it off on Ira and the security tab appeared. Using it I gave myslef
full permission on Ira and that resolved the problem. Both computers now
can see and access files on the other.
