Can the new XP SP2 be installed over SP1a or SP1? SP1a is
intalled on one computer while SP1 came preinstalled on a
new computer last fall. I was told not to install SP1a
over SP1.

SP2 is still undergoing development and has not been released.
I would advise not to install any SP2 beta version you may have
come across.

SP1 and SP1a are identical except for the fact Microsoft removed
its Virtual Machine from SP1a. Therefore, do not attempt to install
SP1a over SP1.

Yes, When SP2 is released around the middle of the year, you will
be able to install it over either one.

That's because, although it doesn't hurt to install SP1a over
SP1, it accomplishes nothing. The two are identical, except that
SP1a has Java Virtual Machine removed, which Microsoft did in
accordance with a court order.
