Setup Hangs at Installing Devices

Tried to do a clean install of XP (format hard drive &
install from scratch). When setup gets to the 34 minute
mark (installing devices) it stops responding. If I
restart PC it resumes setup, finishes, but then will only
start in Safe Mode, but not Safe Mode with Networking.
Knowledge Base had reports of a similiar problem but it
was specific to the Sony Vaio PC. This is a home built
machine that ran 2000 happily for 2-3 years. It meets the
system and compatability requirements given by microsoft.
Have repeated install from scratch 5+ times with same
results.

Anyone with any ideas?

1. Check for BIOS updates
2. Remove all connected devices (with the exception of the mouse, keyboard
and monitor).
3. Restart setup and try again.
4. If setup hangs again, press Shift+F10 and from the DOS prompt type
"devmgmt.msc" and press enter, this will open Device Manager. Now simply
look for devices with Bangs on them and right click and uninstall or remove
the device and reboot the omputer.

NOTE: Do not uninstall essential devices like the hard drive controller.
