Setup Fails on re-install of Windows XP

I tried to re-install Windows XP after getting some error
messages about corrupt files.

The Setup program runs for a few minutes and then stops
with the following errors (from Setuperr.log):

Warning: Setup failed to remove the product catalog
IEEXCEP.CAT.
Warning: Setup failed to remove the product catalog
SP1.CAT.
Warning: Setup failed to remove the product catalog
DXBDA.CAT.
Warning: Setup failed to remove the product catalog
DXXP.CAT.
Warning: Setup failed to remove the product catalog
quartz.cat.
Warning: Setup failed to remove the product catalog
wmplayer.cat.
Warning: Setup failed to remove the product catalog
dxxp.cat.
Error: The signature for Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade
is invalid. The error code is fffffdda.
The system cannot find message text for message number
0xfffffdda in the message file for syssetup.dll.
Fatal Error: Setup failed to install the product catalogs.
This is a fatal error. The setup log files should contain
more information.
***

Can anyone help me? - can't get back to Windows or exit
the Setup program - just keeps trying to re-start in Setup
now.

Thanks!

There are two ways of installing XP - a clean install where the hard
drive is formatted first and an upgrade install where the new operating
system is installed "on top" of the old operating system. If you are
doing the latter, try a clean install instead. Formatting the drive
will wipe all current data, so you would expect to reinstall programs
from cd and restore data from backups. Be sure all peripherals
(printers, scanners, cameras) are disconnected and any BIOS-level
antivirus is disabled. If you are already doing a clean install and the
installation is failing, you probably have bad hardware. Start with a
RAM test - I like Memtest86 from www.memtest86.com - and let the test
run for an extended time, like overnight (unless you get errors
immediately). If the RAM is good, then run a hard drive diagnostic
utility, which you can get from the drive mftr.'s website.

The very same thing happened to me this morning...are we out of luck saving data on the computer? Is there any other way to log in and backup data?? Virginia
