Thanks for your response. I tried pressing F6 at the initial stages of
installation and then S, in order to load relevant drivers. But, nothing
happens. I do however get an error message at some stage saying that ther's
not enough virtual memory - whatever it means.

How far do you get?
Can you get into windows?
If so, we can set virtual memory.
tell me where you are at in windows startup process.

If you hav a floppy drive then I suggest boot-up with Win98/WinME
startup disk and do a quick format of your HD. This will delete XP
cached files from HD and save you valuable time working out what is
wrong!!!.

Then you can either bootup with OS CD or just run SETUP from the CD by
typing

d:\setup

Normally there is no need to boot up from CDs to install XP; It is just
for convenience as people don't have floppy drives these days and not
many people are aware of how to boot from USBs. DELL provides special
tools to boot up from usbs but that is a different matter altogether
from your current problem.

Hello Dennis, Thanks for helping me.

By pressing function key 'F5' I get an Advance Option Menu:
Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Enable Boot Logging
Enable VGA Mode
Last known good configuration
Directory Services Restore Mode
Debugging Mode

Start Windows Normally
Reboot
Return to OS choices Menu

I must have tried each and every option at least 2-3 times and always get
back to the square one. That is, "Setup being restarted........". Only when I
go for "Directory Services Restore Mode " option, it starts doing something
and displays messages like 'System processor, 112 MB, Volume is clean' and
then it goes into safe mode. After that I get an error message " Not enough
virtual memory" and then it starts all over again.

Am I making any sense?

Hi,
It would be fantastic if I could do that. I have already tried booting it up
with Win98 startup disk. Floppy drive just gets bypassed. Thanks for your
suggestion anyway.

No. You need to change the setup in BIOS so that first bootup is Floppy
then CD then HD.

To go to bios, press DEL key (sometimes F2 in old PCs) and go to Advaced
BIOS Features. this is normally done at boot time but it has to be very
quickly.

Where about in London are you? I am in Central London virtually
everyday so I can help you out! this is 2 minutes job or less!!

How much RAM is there?
I think a clean installation will be better.

Hi, I'm in Hayes, Middlesex.
I HAVE tried with DEL key as well as F2. It didn't work.
By the way it's SAMSUNG 'stupid' Laptop VM8000.
Cricket will be starting soon - so I'll have another go in a minute. If it
didn't work and if you are anywhere near Ealing, Uxbridge or in between, I
could meet you with my sorry SAMSUNG.
Thanks for your generous offer.

Yes, I can meet you up in Wembley. Though, Central London is better
because we can sit at many places where you have free Internet
connection!.

Regards,

good luck for your cricket. Do you support England or Pakistan?

It would be alright for me to meet you in central London. Can I phone you to
arrange the time and a place?
I support the game of Cricket although I'm Flintoff's greatest fan. He's a
breath of fresh air and every cricket team in the world should have one like
him.
Regards.
