Setting up profile for Send Only

D

Don Jones

Is there a way within Outlook 2000 or Outlook Express to
configure the mail profile for Sending E-Mail via SMTP w/o
setting up a POP3 account for Internet E-Mail?

Have an application that uses Outlook or Outlook express
to send mail. No requirement to receive mail.

Tried setting up the account and was forced to put in a
dummy POP3 server. When sending an E-Mail, I was prompted
for the username and password on the POP3 server. SMTP
server does not require a user to login.

You can configure te Send/Receive group for that account to send only. To do
this go to Tools-> Options-> tab Mail Setup-> button Send/Receive-> select
the group and press Edit. Here disable the Receive option.

Hi Don,

In the Outlook Express, you can do as the following steps.

1. Create an email account and input the virtual POP3 server and input the
SMTP server
2. Click Tools > Options
3. Uncheck the "Send and receive messages at startup" box in the General
tab and uncheck the "Send messages immediately" in the Send tab
4. Click OK
5. Compose the mails
6. Click the Tools > Send and Receive > Send All

Then, the Outlook Express will only comtact the SMTP server and send the
mails. It will not contact the POP3 mail.

In Outlook, we can do as the following steps.

1. Create an email account and input the virtual POP3 server and input the
SMTP server
2. Click Tools > Options
3. Uncheck the "Send immediately when connected" in the Mail Setup tab
4. Click the Send/Receive button in the Mail Setup tab
5. Select the "All Accounts Online and Offline" and click the
Edit button
6. Uncheck the "Send mail items" and "Receive mail items"
7. Click OK and click Close
8. Click OK
9. Compose the mails
10. Click the Tools > Send/Receive > Send All

Then, the Outlook will only comtact the SMTP server and send the mails. It
will not contact the POP3 mail.

Thanks for the reply.

In Outlook 2000 SP3, I have no Mail Setup tab under
tools\options. Is there another place I can go to access
the same info?

Thanks.

Hi Don,

I have checked the Outlook 2000 configuration. It seems that it will check
for the POP3 server to get the mails by default.

Since then, we can do as the following steps.

1. Input the real POP3 server in the mail account. When the Outlook starts
up, it will check for the new mail from the POP3 server.
2. Input the SMTP server you want to use.
3. In the "Mail Delivery tab of the Tools > Options, uncheck the "Check for
new messages every 10 minutes"
4. Check the "Send messages immediately when connected"
5. After you compose a new mail and click Send, the mail will be sent
immediately and it will not try to check the POP3 server
6. Or, you can uncheck the "Send messages immediately when connected".
After you compose some mails, you can click Tools > Send to send all these
mails.

Suggestion did not work. Outlook Still tries to connect
to POP3 server. We do not have a POP3 server only and
SMTP server.

Any other ideas?

Thanks.

Hi Don,

Sorry, Outlook 2000 will try to access the POP3 server when starts. We can
click cancel to ignore this.

Then, compose the mail and click Tools > Send to send the mail.

Or, you can use the Outlook Express to do this.

You also can upgrade to the Outlook 2003. I have given you the steps to
configure the Outlook 2003 not to check the POP3 server when starts.
