Setting up new speakers

Guest

My speakers arent working and ive checked that they are turned on and they
are plugged into the correct jack (i think) and the sound volume is also on.
I've gone through the Microsoft troubleshooter and I think the problem is
that my computer doesn't recognize the new hardware but I dont know how to
add the speakers as a new sound device. When I checked on the device manager,
I dont think the speakers were listed and I tried searching for hardware
changes but nothing happened... Any ideas, please? I need sound! Thanks in
advance!

Try plugging in a pair of headphones (from an MP3 player, perhaps) into
the socket where you plugged your speakers. The correct socket for your
speakers is often colour-coded green. If the headphones don't work, then
neither will your speakers.

Whilst your MP3 player is without its headphones, plug your speakers
into the MP3 player... do they work now?

Let us know, then we can make a few more guesses,

If your speakers are plugged into a 1/8" mini jack on the back of the PC,
they won't ever be detected as hardware and will never display in Device
Manager. This is perfectly normal.

About the only time they would be is if they use a USB connection and have a
driver, which would need to be installed first.

The sound card/chip would be what is detected. Be sure that that *is
there*, and that you don't have to install drivers for them - and that the
motherboard drivers were installed.

First, check that the speakers are working, period. Find something else to
plug them into, say the headphone jack on an MP3 player, and test from
there. If they're working, doublecheck where you plugged them into and
that the audio source is active and isn't muted - this is in the windows
Volume Control, which you can find under accessories, entertainment or
start, run, sndvol32.exe. Start playing something that should go for a
few minutes and try each jack.

These days, soundcard jacks are often colour coded and speakers often go
into the green plug.
