Tried to network my Windows XP PRO desktop with my Windows XP Home Laptop.
NIC to NIC connection. Ran the wizards. It says that the network cable is unplugged.
I used CAT 5e and CAT 6 network cable( I tried both of them separately). My network adapters are working properly. I tried everything, but , the problem is: it says some of your computers hardware is disconnected.
How I can solve my problem and network between my computers successfully?

I had a similar problem, and was told my WMI files were
corupt. To find if this is the prob go START>CONTROLE
PANEL>NETWORK CONECTIONS. Right click your conextion and
go to Properties. Go to Advanced tab. If your WMI files
are knackerd, you will get nothing here exept a message
telling you this. It is possable to restore these by
restoring a previous configeration, however this did not
work for me, and the only way I solved this was to do a
clean re-instalation of XP. My Laptop n PC network now
works fine

To connect 2 computers directly without a hub / switch / router,
you need a special cable called a 'crossover cable'.

A regular cat5 patch cable will not work, and will
cause the symptoms you see.

You can buy crossover cable anyplace you can get regular cables.

This page shows you the difference:
