setting up fax in windows XP

I only have dial up service where I am.
In setting up for fax, the software inserts a "1" in
front of the fax number. The telephone dialing area has
many area codes and will not accept a call such as:
1 555 555 5555.
I cannot find a way to take the "1" out of the out going
fax number.
Please help.........

You need that 1 in the phone number. It's the only way Dialing Rules will be
processed by the Fax Service.
Sounds to me like you need to start paying attention to Dialing Rules.
