Setting up an FTP server, but port 21 is stealth

Jeremy

I'm trying to set up an FTP server using Win XP and an FTP
server program recomended by a friend called serv-u.

I've disabled all the Win XP ICFs on my connections. I've
uninstalled Norton Internet Security and I've check my
ADSL modem's settings, but port 21 is still stealth!

I've used the Shield Up tester at www.grc.com and a couple
of others I've stumbled across. I can't figure out why
port 21 is still stealth and it's strating to drive me
crazy.

I was going to install the IIS FTP server that comes with
XP, but I can't find my XP CD. Regardless, it should be
(IS!) possible to do it using a 3rd party program without
installing the XP support.

Any sugestions?

Hi Jeremy,

Are you using a router as well? If so, you need to set up port forwarding to
the local IP of the machine hosting the ftp server.

Yeah, thanks, I'm using an NB1300, forgot to mention that.
I'll poke around the settings, but if anyone has
experience with this model, help would be appreciated.

Aye, there's the rub. My router (NB1300 ADSL modem/router)
has a dummy pair of port forwards set up:

Public Port Private Port Type Host IP
21 21 TCP 192.168.1.255
21 21 UDP 192.168.1.255
and same over for port 23

This is to stop people from FTPing into the *router* and
messing with its settings. How should I structure this,
and how can I determine the IP of my desktop on my LAN?

Currently the LAN is just the router and my desktop, but I
am going to connect my laptop as soon as I replace the NIC
I broke.

Thanks,

J

Thanks for all the help! All done, I forwarded 21 to 21 on
my local machine (ipconfig from a command line gave me the
IP to use)

Can't help with the port 21 stealth problem, having never run an FTP,
but why use Port 21? Open a different port and you'll be far less
obvious to hackers scanning ports. Port 21 jumps out as says I'm FTP,
hack me!
