Setting up an ADSL modem router with a Wireless Router

Hi I have just installed a BT Voyager 205 modem router to get my broadband
working and when I got to the question in the wizard asking me how I was
going to use the 205, was it with just one PC or 2 PCs or a games console I
was stumped? I wanted to use it with a Medion MD 40900 wireless router so for
some reason I chose games console just to move on but I wish I had chosen the
2 PCs in hind sight as I think that would have sent the Broadband down the
Ethernet cable where it would have been some use in the wireless router. I
have used the USB cable from the Voyager to my PC and that works OK and that
leaves the Ethernet cable to go to the Medion. I assume that goes into the
WAN socket on the Medion wireless router and another cross over cable to go
to the PC in the LAN slot. As a silver surfer I am groping around in the dark
somewhat so any help will be appreciated

Charlie,

I wonder if it wouldn't be better for you to rerun the wizard, and make the
right selection. The choices are indeed interesting.

If you're going to have 2 (or more) computers, I would bet that at some time
you're going to want to move files between the two. This makes it useful if the
Voyager and the Medion are properly setup to start. By default, you'll end up
with the 2 computers in 2 separate little worlds ("subnets"), and neither
computer will be able to access the other.

Please tell us more about your network. Will you be trying to access anything
between your 2 computers? Does your first computer only have a USB connector?
Here is where I would peruse the Voyager users guide for you, to anticipate the
answers that you might need, but BT provides only a page reading:
The BT Voyager 205 Router comes as part of a broadband package. For Technical
Support please contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) from the list below.

In other words, not a lot of help. So you'll have to do all of the research
here.

Hi Chuck
Thanks for your help. I never give enough information and that comes of
being a silver surfer and assuming whoever you are asking knows what I know
about my system! You obviously know a lot more and that is why I am asking
you but you need the basic info to help me. This is what i have. I have a
desk top that I have the Voyager and medion fitted to. I want to confiure
this set up so that the medion will transmit the ADSL so that i can use a
laptop online downstairs in the warm using the wireless router. The Medion
comes with two USB gizmos, one of whihc I plug into my laptop and it receives
info from the Router. my question is what do i call the Router? Is it another
PC or a games console as these seem to be the only options that BT give me.
Ads you say their handbook is useless and they want me to ring them on a
premium rate number to caht about this. If all else fails then that is my
last resort but premium rate numbers and pensions do not mix!
Thanks again
Charlie

Charlie,

The good news is that there's a fair amount of information available on the web
about the Voyager. The bad news is that not too many recommend your using the
USB interface on the Voyager. Especially if you have a second router, it will
be far simpler, and more fun for you, if you connect both computers to the
Medion.

So let's start by asking if you have User Guides for the Medion and the Voyager?
And tell us what make and model are your 2 computers?

It will be best if you can connect the Medion to the Voyager, and connect both
computers to the Medion. You can then make the Medion into a switch (instead of
a router).

Please start by listing, word for word, what the selections are when configuring
the Voyager. And provide the make and model of both computers.

HI Chuck and once again thanks for your patience. I have been playing all day
with my toys to very little gain but alot of frustration. I agree with what
you say about using the medion as a switch. How is my question. My machines
are:- the desk top is a Fujitsu/Siemens Scaleo P and the Laptop is Toshiba
Satellite 2450. I have the user guide for the Medion but it was a present
from a friend of mine who over winters in Spain and it is Spanihs and even
though we can translate the bits that seem to matter it does not work. The
Voyager handbook is none existant as they think they can solve everything. I
spent 2 hours in a written discussion with someone in India who knew little
using their form of MSN. It was hopeless. Today i spent a fortune on the
phone with their helpdesk only to be told after an hour to get the local
engineer round. This will be a non starter. What i want to do first is to
just get the Voyager to work with my PC over the ethernet cable. I can get it
to work with my laptop. In fact i have written a splurge that i was goint to
send to BT but they have no contact us except this Indian connection. here is
is:-

Hi
I have just purchased a BT Voyager 205 to replace my Voyager 105 because I
wanted to use a wireless router for use with my laptop in another part of the
house. I have loaded the software and the 205 works well with the USB lead
but will not work with the Ethernet lead. I have tried allsorts of
combinations and uninstalled and installed several times without change. I
think my problem started with the Wizard when I first installed the software
as I chose the option that I was using the combination of the 205 with a PC
and a games console. I have not got a games console but as the option of the
combination of the 205 with a PC and a wireless router was not offered I
chose this just to move on along the wizard. I thought at worst I could
change this later but it seems to think that this is what I want even when I
uninstall and install again saying that I want a direct use between the 205
and just one PC, forget my wireless router. I used this last combination in
desperation on my Laptop and the Ethernet cable works fine on the internet
without the USB being plugged in even though I had to plug the USB in to
complete the wizard as it stopped loading without it being plugged in.
How can I get the Ethernet cable to work on line with my PC?
Thanks

I hope that this gives you some more info to go on and if you need some more
then please ask. I would love to take you advice on the medion as a switch
but first we must get the 205 to talk to my PC with the ethernet don't you
think? If is will help to contact me direct then i am on
(e-mail address removed)
Thanks Chuck

Charlie,

Since your problems seem to start with configuring the Voyager, let's try
something different. DSLR Forums has a forum with folks in the UK like you,
including some BT subscribers I'd bet. DSLR Forums is free, and help there is
very reliable. If you register there (please do that - registration is free
too), let me know your registered name, and I can keep an eye out for you.

OK, Charlie. I asked the mods to move it to the UK Broadband forum, I think the
UK subscribers there will have more of an idea than general wireless helpers.
