Setting up a sata drive as new "C"

B

berguy

Hello everyone, I wanted to replace my 40 gig Ide "C" drive with a larger one
and I decided I might as well install a sata drive. Upon installation of XP
everything was going well, the drivers were being installed then all of a
sudden I got a "stop" blue screen. Something to do with the hard drive
possibly having a virus????? I have contacted Western Digital who finally
sent me to Asus who finally referred me to Kingston. for the ram. WD
suggested it was a Sata controller issue, I found the driver at Asus and
pressed F6 during installation but that did not help. I did everything Asus
suggested as with Kingston with no success. The drive is recognized by the
BIOS, only as a third master Ide. I cannot believe I am the only one with
this problem. My Mobo is P5LD2, is there anyone who can help me with this
situation?

Thank you very much

We need the exact wording of the BSOD, "Something to do with the hard drive
possibly having a virus" doesn't give us any useful info.

Also you have to follow instruction given in your mobo manual for using sata
as boot drive
Or instructions on Asus site

Using a sata drive can involve amending bios settings, amongst other things

Guy:
You've really got to describe your situation & problem more clearly.

1. We'll assume that when the system operated with your former 40 GB PATA
HDD, it booted & functioned without *any* problem(s), right?

2. Now you've disconnected that 40 GB HDD from the machine, installed your
new SATA HDD to the *first* SATA connector on the motherboard, right? If
not, do it that way.

3. Now you've inserted your XP OS installation CD and booted to it because
you want to fresh-install the OS onto the new SATA HDD, right?

4. So the SATA HDD is the *only* storage device connected to the system at
this point, right? If not, make sure it is.

5. Now you boot to the XP installation CD and you're able to get to the
Welcome to Setup screen, right? No error messages along the way at this
point, right?

6. And you're able to get into the setup process until the problem arises,
right?

7. Setup apparently "sees" the HDD and you've partitioned & formatted the
disk during the initial stages of the setup process?

Assuming *all* the above is pretty much the scenario up to now, describe
PRECISELY what happens when the problem arises.

How far do you get in the setup process?

What exactly is the error message you receive?

Have you tried to install the OS multiple times?

Any reason to believe you could be dealing with a defective HDD? Have you
checked it out with the HDD diagnostic utility available from WD? (I realize
it's probably not a defective HDD but when all else fails...)
