Setting passwords on a network

I've got a desktop box hardwired to a wireless router, and a laptop
accessing as a wireless device.

I've shared some folders on both computers so that I can access them from
the other.

Can anyone (evil-doers) that connects to my wireless network have access to
these shared folders?

If yes, how do I password-protect them?

Good question Paul. I would have to say No.

Its a NetGear WNR2000. When I set it up, I just walked thru the wizard, and
I don't remember being asked to set a password.

When my computers boot up and connect, it never asks for a password.

Have any idea how I would set one?

It wouldn't. As long as you have a NATS firewall on your router (and most
are these days) then your wired desktop is OK. It's the wireless that could
be the problem. You need to go into the wireless settings on the router and
make sure that you have activated WPA security.

Its a NetGear WNR2000. When I set it up, I just walked thru the wizard,

and I don't remember being asked to set a password.

In the Netgear manual, there's a section on "Configuring your wireless
network" (p21 onwards).

Follow the steps there to name your wireless network (SSID=Service Set
Identifier) something other than the default NETGEAR and implement wireless
security (WPS) i.e. set access password for your wireless network.

Until you do, anyone within range can access the Internet and/or your
network.
