i've recently loaded nero burning software and it appears to have set itself
as the default media player
i.e. when i rip songs to my harddrive they have the nero icon when viewing
the files in explorer and double clicking them opens nero player to play them
i remember that its possible to set a specific application to play say audio
files by default but can't remember how to do this
can someone refresh my memory
thanks

Right click on file. Click on "Open with...". At the bottom of this list is
"Choose Program". Click on this. Choose the program to open the file
or you may need to browse to it if you don't see it in the list.
Media player will more than likely be in the list. Before you leave
this dialog box be sure to check the box o in the bottom left corner of the
program list box. After you click the "OK" the file with the extention you
used open with will be associated with that program. To change it again
start from the beginning.

While this may be true for Media Player, not all programs have this
option. It is best to discover both ways.

And here's another way to tackle this: Use the Set Program Access and
Defaults available via the start menu or Control Panel to set the preferred
media player.

How to change your default programs and enable or remove access to
Microsoft Windows and non-Microsoft programs
