Setting default applications based on file type

Currently have problem with documents opening in Notepad instead of Word.
Also want to assign different application to open *.jpg files. Please remind
me how to do this.

i have a problem with my xp its home editon i upgrade from 98 evertime my
computer start after i log in it is sopose toopen up msconfig as a program
but it opens up like notepad it has codes i cant do anthing cuz everthing
opens up with notepad help need to change that to a program where i can do
that my warrent and support is up plz help

You might also run this to find a possible cause for the change:

Malwarebytes© Corporation
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam/program/mbam-setup.exe

Also try a restore point dated before the problem first occurred. If
there's malware, I doubt a restore point will help.
 
i will try that i cant restore it cuz it pops up note pad its not even
coneted to the internet but my friend put his flash drive in oh maybe he got
me a virus
