Setting associations

Sometimes when I recieve an e-mail with an attachment, I try to open the
attachment and a window comes up that tells me the file has no program
associated with it for this action and to go to set associations control
panel to create one. I was told that you can do it the same as in XP but
found that not to be true. my question is how do I create a association.

Save the attachment to the desktop, right click it and choose the correct
program.

Save the attachment. Navigate to it via Windows Explorer, open the
file. If no association exists, Windows will ask you what you want to do.
Select the option: "Select a program from a list of installed programs."
Pick the program that should open the file. This will only have to be
done once.

What is the extension of the attachment (the part of the file name starting
with the last period? If you don't have a program that can handle that
extension, associating that program with it will not help.

For some extensions, you can click on the orb at the lower left, then click
on Default Programs, then click on Set your default programs, then click
on the program, then click on Set this program as default.
