Missing file association

hi can any body help? when i receive a word doc attachment in windows mail i
try to open it, but when i do it throws up the message "this file does not
have a program associated with it. for performing this action create an
assocation in the set association control panel". i do what i am told but it
does not work. i have to copy the word doc attachment to my desktop (could be
anywhere) to open the attachment. help
