Hello,
I am trying to set up my account and I have an aol email account. Aol says
to use:

The basic information that you need to setup using IMAP and POP3 is as
follows:
Your e-mail address is (e-mail address removed) or (e-mail address removed).
Be sure to include the @aol.com or @aim.com suffix.
The incoming mail (POP) server address is: imap.aol.com and imap.aim.com for
IMAP, and pop.aol.com or pop.aim.com for POP3.
Check the box for leaving messages on the server.
The outgoing mail (SMTP) server address is: smtp.aol.com or smtp.aim.com,
port: 587.
Your user name is your AOL or AIM screen name.
Your password is your AOL® or AIM® passwor

Not sure which box it was that would not accept your server information.
Assuming your account is at least partially set up, you can go back and
edit the information.

The outgoing server name can be entered here:
Go to Tools, Accounts, select that account, Properties, Servers.

The port number can be entered here:
Go to Tools, Accounts, select that account, Properties, Advanced.

ok, so now I have the port 587 in the advance field page. Now if I try to
send mail it gets put into the out box and I get a message that I have one or
more messages in your out box, does not have a valid account specified, would
you like to use your default account.
also how do I keep my aol from being emptied into the windows mail account.
I really want only to be able to send email from here, like if I am replying
to a craigslist offer or sending a page from a news event to someone without
having to copy and theen go to my aol account. thanks

Open the Outbox folder. Move any messages in that folder to the
Drafts folder. Then try sending a simple test message to yourself.
Does that work?
The messages that were in the Outbox may have become 'stuck'
due to having the wrong SMTP server port.

To prevent the messages being removed from the AOL server:
Go to Tools, Accounts, select the AOL mail account, Properties, Advanced,
select "Leave a copy of messages on server." Depending on how
much server space AOL allows, you may want to select one or
both of the two associated 'remove' options.

Hello, I tried to foreward a draft to me and this is the error message that I
got back. perhaps I need to start over again.
In the incoming mail what is the difference of "pop& imap," does it make a
difference which you use. thanks for the patience

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)'. Subject 'e bay
(metro detroit)', Account: 'pop.aol.com', Server: 'smtp.aol.com', Protocol:
SMTP, Server Response: '556 CLIENT AUTHENTICATION REQUIRED. USE ESMTP EHLO
AND AUTH.', Port: 587, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 556, Error Number:
0x800CCC78

To fix that send error:
Go to Tools, Accounts, select that account, Properties, Servers.
The box for "My server requires authentication" must be checked.

POP versus IMAP affects receiving only, not sending. Which one
of those two choices you pick depends on which one your mail
provider supports. According to AOL, they support IMAP:
