set up hangs at about half way through "detecting and installing devices"

After problems after installing SP4, I foolishly attempted
to boot from the Windows 2000 Pro CD and after a repair,
now set up hangs at about half way through "detecting and
installing devices" I am stuck.

Any advice? HELP!

If you stored a backup of your System State on another
partition, preferably on another drive or on a CD-ROM, you
can feel fairly free to reinstall 2000 fresh and restore
your System State afterwards. If you're not in the habit
of this, it's not a bad idea to keep the latest System
State on a CD-RW and back it up every time you update your
ERD. You do them both in the Backup utility.
