Set Associations

My operating system is Vista, I am using Windows Mail and am attempting to
open a Power Point file. I have been unable to do so because I have to
Create an association in the Set Associations control panel. Where do I find
the Set Associations control panel?

Do you have PowerPoint on the Vista computer? If not, you won't be able to
set an association to it. But the easy way to get to the list is to
right-click the icon and choose Open. Choose the second option "Select a
program from a list of installed programs", then click PowerPoint (if it's
installed on that computer) and click OK.

If you already have PowerPoint Viewer 2003 (or 2007) installed and yet this happens, check the following article for solution.

If anyone else is reading this thread and has this problem, this fix worked
perfectly and the instructions are very straightforward.

Well, I looked all over, and all I see is questions and no answers. How
could this post be helpful to me when all it does is ask the same exact
question that I have: Where the heck is the "set associations control
panel?????" nothing in my control panel works because none of the
associations have been set. What is the deal? Anybody know? Thanks. Rita

Hi, Rita.

In WinXP, we used to set associations in Control Panel | Folder Options |
File Types. In Vista, it has moved to Control Panel | Default Programs.
Have a look there, then post back if you have further questions.

Better yet, post your questions about file associations in the Vista General
newsgroup, rather than here in Vista Mail. You'll have a better chance of
getting good answers to those questions there, I think. Or just go to Help
and Support and type "associations" into the Search box.

All the questions have been responded to.
If you really want to see the replies, forget that awful web interface
you are using to access Microsoft Communities. Instead, click on
this link:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.vista.mail

To set file associations, go to Default Programs, which you can
reach either from the Start menu or the Control Panel, then click on:
"Associate a file type..."

The other way to do this is to save the attachment, then
right-click on the saved file, select Open With...
The rest is self-explanatory. The selection you make should stick,
so that from then on the file extension is properly associated.

Ramesh:
I have the same problem with opening .wpd files with MS Word with an
attachment in Windows Mail.
Would a similar Registry fix work here? I can't find a comparable lne for
Word.

WordPerfect files? Are you sure Word can open those?

I am trying to open a Wordperfect (.wpd) attachment in Widows Mail, not
Powerpoint. Is there a registry tweak to solve the inability to open it
DIRECTLY from Mail?

Hi jack1961,

Are you able to save the .WPD file to your desktop, and open it from there using *Microsoft Word*?

Yes, no problem once the file is saved to a Windows folder rather than from
an e-mail attachment.

Sorry! Neither works. Default Programs has no way of adding a new extension.
Opening the .wpd file from a folder or desktop works fine but does not cure
the e-mail attachment failure to open.

Yes, no problem. I want to save some steps by opening the attachment
directly from the e-mail as I have always done in XP.
