Program associations for files received as attachments

I received a .pps file as an attachment to an email. When I attempted to
'open' it, I received the message:
"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this
action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel."
Yet .pps is associated with MS Power Point in Set Associations and the file
in question, when downloaded, 'opens' in Power Point.

Any help would be appreciated.
