Set association

My operating system is now Vista. I am learning to use Windows Mail. When
attempting to open an email with pictures attached (jpeg), I am unable to do
so because I have to Create an association in the Set Associations control
panel. Where do I find the Set Associations control panel?

stating that I have no association when trying to open a word document: I
have tried everything here and recieved this info:

The .doc listings have nothing to do with it.
Save a JPG to your desktop.
Right click it and choose Open With.
Click Choose the default program.
Click the one you want.
Make sure "Always use the selected ..." is checked.
Click OK

Somehow (?) the .doc type got associated with Acrobat Reader. Try applying the REG fix here:
