Services no longer start and stop, can't install anything, etc...

Hello all,
I am hoping someone may be able to help me out as I am just
about at my wit's end. I have three Windows 2000 Servers that, since
updating UltraVNC to full release 1.0 two days ago, will no longer do
what they once did. Examples include; I can no longer manually start
and stop services, I can no longer install any .msi file, I can no
longer open certain windows (Network Properties, certain cpl applets),
I can no longer run Windows Update and I cannot create or install new
services.
These are, as I said, Windows 2000 Server machines with SP4
installed. I have tried uninstalling UltraVNC and removing any and
all registry entries I could find relating to it. I have run sfc with
no luck, and I have tried a restore of the system state a few weeks
ago, also with no luck. As I have said, I am at my wit's end. I am
currently creating a new server to try and replicate the problem and
hope that an overlay of the OS will take care of it, but I am not
extremely hopeful.
That all being said, is there anyone out there who may be able
to shed some light on my problems? I am also participating in a
thread on the UltaVNC forums concerning this issue, but so far, no one
there has been able to help.

Thanks in advance!

Shawn

Hi,

You haven't by any chance PowerChute 6.x UPS software (APC) installed
on the servers?

Torgeir

Torgeir,
Actually, I just checked and yes, we have PowerChute Business
Agent 6.0.2 on these servers. Are you saying that this could be the
cause of my soon to be formed ulcer? :)

Cheers,
Shawn

Thank You!!! That was it! I apologize for the original message, as I
didn't see your thread when I search earlier. I think it may have
been the delirium I was in. Thank you again, I can now sleep tonight!

Cheers,

Yeah, bunch of us have apparently been sweating and working all hours
because of this one. Isn't it illegal to install a damaging "time bomb"
in software ;)

Hi,

The reason for your issues is described here:

PowerChute Business Edition - Customers Using 6.x Must Upgrade to 7.x
due to Java Runtime Environment expiration
http://nam-en.apc.com/cgi-bin/nam_en.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=7202

I assume you did a reboot after updating UltraVNC, and that it was
the reboot that triggered the issue, and not the UltraVNC upgrade.

If you still want to use PowerChute, upgrading PowerChute to 7.x
is what you need to do.

Interesting. Thanks for the link. It would have been nice to have
some warning from APC on this though. And you are correct on how the
problem presented itself.

For the record, I will not be staying with PowerChute. I think that
using Win 2k's UPS service will work fine my situation, considering my
server room is on a backup generator as well.

Thanks again to all for the assistance!

Shawn
